Lava erupted from the summit of Kilauea volcano in Hawaii.

Dramatic footage shows geologists from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Hawaiian Volcano Observatory collecting tephra that fell on Crater Rim Drive on January 15. The area is closed to the public within Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park.

Viewers can hear the tinkling sound of glassy lava particles landing on the road.

Another striking video captures bright red-orange hot liquid pouring out of the summit, reaching heights up to 328ft (100 metres).

Kilauea is the world's most active volcanic mass and is the central feature of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

Its caldera is nearly three miles long and two miles wide, with an area of more than four square miles.
