Lebanon: Ceasefire in Lebanon must transition into durable peace: UN
Beirut, Lebanon - January 16, 2025 Storyline: UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk said on Thursday that the ceasefire in Lebanon must transition into a durable peace. Speaking in Beirut, the Lebanese capital, Turk said despite the immense challenges, there is hope for what lies ahead in Lebanon. The fragile yet critically important ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel remains largely intact, albeit with worrying reports of continued demolitions by Israeli forces in towns and villages in southern Lebanon. People in the region are slowly starting to rebuild their lives thanks to the successful conclusion of the presidential election, which ended a two-year political gridlock. Yet, the high commissioner emphasized, deep wounds from the conflict remain. On the same day, the UN Security Council reaffirmed its support for Lebanon's territorial integrity, sovereignty and political independence in accordance with Council resolution 1701 (2006), in a presidential statement. The council welcomed the election of Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and the designation of Nawaf Salam as prime minister, describing the recent developments as "a long-awaited and critical step" to overcome its political and institutional crisis. It called on the international community to extend humanitarian assistance to the Lebanese people, including through facilitating the safe return of displaced persons. Over one million were displaced at the height of the conflict here, with more than 160,000 people still in a state of displacement. The ceasefire in Lebanon must transition into a durable peace and civilians must be able to return safely." [SHOT OVERLAYING SOUNDBITE] 3.
