Police were investigating the body of yet another tourist found dead off the coast of Thailand.

The middle-aged male holidaymaker was discovered floating face-down some 700ft off Jomtien Beach in Pattaya, at 1:30 pm on January 16.

Police said he was wearing white swimming trunks and had no signs of assault on his body. He was estimated to have been dead for around eight hours.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Sanan Kotanont of the Pattaya City Police Station said: 'The body of the deceased is currently undergoing a post-mortem exam and we have not yet been able to identify who he is or where he came from.'

Marine rescue volunteer Wanlop Boonchu added: 'A business owner in the area reported that a suspicious object resembling a human body was floating face-down in the sea. We rode a rubber boat to the coordinates to check, and confirmed that it was indeed a dead person. We have taken the body back to shore for police to examine.'

Beach drownings are a recurring safety concern in Thailand, especially in tourist hotspots like Phuket, Pattaya, and Krabi. The deaths often attributed to strong rip currents, lack of swimming skills, and disregard for warning signages.

The waters are most dangerous during the country's rainy monsoon season, when red flags are placed in beaches to warn of dangerous sea conditions.

The Thai Meteorological Agency reported that the northeast monsoon was prevailing over the Gulf of Thailand, southern Thailand, and the Andaman Sea. The weather system was forecasted to churn up waves up to 10ft in the Gulf of Thailand until January 18.
