A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder after a woman and a two-year-old girl were found with "very serious injuries" at a home in Surrey."

Officers were called to an address on Woodthorpe Road in Ashford at 1:15pm yesterday (January 16) following a report of a concern for safety at the location.

The woman, aged in her 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene while the child was taken to hospital for treatment, police said.

A man in his 30s has been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.

The victims and the suspect were known to each other. There is not believed to be any wider risk to the community, Surrey Police said.

An investigation, led by the Surrey and Sussex Police Major Crime Team, is underway and enquiries remain ongoing.

DCI Kimball Edey said: "This investigation is in its early stages and a team of specialist officers are working around the clock to gather as much information as possible."

"Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victims at this unbelievably difficult time."
