Yemen: Yemenis rally to support Palestinians after Gaza ceasefire deal
Sana'a, Yemen - January 17, 2025 Storyline: Thousands of Yemenis gathered at Al-Sabeen Square in the heart of the capital Sanaa Friday to show solidarity with the Palestinian people and to protest against Israel's bombardment of Gaza after Israel and Hamas finally reached a ceasefire agreement set to take effect on Sunday after nearly 15 months of war. Yemenis described this massive turnout as a show of their presence during what they believe are the final moments of the Israel-Hamas conflict. They celebrated the ceasefire and reaffirmed their support for the Palestinian people and emphasized that weekly marches, as well as land and sea attacks, would resume if Israel targeted Gaza again. In a televised speech on Thursday, Houthi group's leader, Abdul Malik al-Houthi, stated that military operations would continue if Israel escalates and commits what he described as "acts of genocide." He added any truce depends on Israel's adherence to the agreement and the position of Palestinian factions on the ground. The Houthi leader also said that his group has launched "1255 attacks" against Israeli cities, Israeli-linked ships, and U.S. warships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden since November 2023, nearly three weeks after the Israel-Hamas war broke out. The Houthi group has been controlling much of northern Yemen since late 2014 after the armed group forced the internationally recognized Yemeni government out of the capital Sanaa. Since November 2023, the Houthis have been carrying out rocket and drone attacks on Israel and disrupting "Israeli-linked" shipping in the Red Sea in solidarity with the Palestinian people. In response, Israel has launched rounds of airstrikes on Houthi targets. In addition, the U.S.-led naval coalition stationed in the area has been conducting regular air raids and strikes on Houthi sites since January 2024 in a joint bid to deter the armed group, prompting the Houthis to expand attacks to include U.S. warships.
