STANDUP (English): HUANG KAIYING, Xinhua correspondent
"In Dongxing, south China's Guangxi, people have the option to travel abroad by bus. A quick ride will take you to the Vietnamese border city of Mong Cai. Let's go and take a test drive of this cross-border transport."
Separated from the Vietnamese city of Mong Cai by only a river, Dongxing serves as a hub for interactions between residents of China and Vietnam.
The special cross-border bus service launched in 2024 has facilitated the exchange even further.
SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): SU SHIHAO, Chinese passenger
"Our company is specialized in cross-border trade, so I frequently travel to Vietnam. The departure station of this bus service happens to be right next to our company. It's so convenient to have this bus service. We just hop on the bus at the doorstep and then we go abroad."
SOUNDBITE 2 (Chinese): WANG HAOCHEN, Chinese passenger
"This bus is absolutely novel and unique. I've never seen a cross-border bus like this before, so I was eager to try it out. After arriving at the Mong Cai bus terminal, I will seamlessly transfer to another bus heading to Hanoi, where I plan to stay and explore for two to three days."
At Dongxing Port and Mong Cai Port, passengers hopped off the bus and went through customs.
On the Vietnamese side, a Hanoi-based Xinhua correspondent got on the same bus.
SOUNDBITE 3 (Vietnamese): NGUYEN THI MEN, Vietnamese passenger
"I'm from Vietnam. I now live in Dongxing, my Chinese husband's hometown. I've taken this bus five times already. This route is very convenient, as it directly heads to the Mong Cai bus terminal. And from there, I can easily go anywhere by bus. I go to Mong Cai just to have a bowl of pho and then I will head back later."
SOUNDBITE 4 (Chinese): CHEN YIN, Deputy manager at Dongxing Public Transportation Co., Ltd.
"This international bus service was launched on Nov. 29, 2024, making it easier for residents of both countries to pass through customs and adding another channel for border crossings."
SOUNDBITE 5 (Vietnamese): DO VAN TUAN, Permanent vice chairman of Mong Cai City People's Committee
"The operation of this cross-border bus route helps promote trade and tourism between Vietnam and China, Quang Ninh province and Guangxi, as well as Mong Cai and Dongxing at various levels."
Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Dongxing and Mong Cai.
