Israel says fighting in Gaza continues over hostage list dispute
Israeli government said on Sunday morning that its military is not halting the fighting in Gaza, despite a ceasefire with Hamas being scheduled to take effect, citing Hamas's failure to provide a list of the first three hostages who were set to be freed later in the day. Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesman Daniel Hagari told a press conference on Sunday morning that Hamas has failed to provide the list of hostages to be released as promised. He stressed that, under the directive of the Israeli prime minister, the ceasefire will not go into effect until Hamas fulfills its obligations. He added that the IDF will continue its military operations in Gaza. Earlier, the Israeli Prime Minister's Office confirmed that the long-awaited ceasefire agreement was set to begin at 8:30 local time on Sunday, but emphasized that it would only take effect when Israel received the promised list of captives from Hamas. Hamas responded by saying that it is committed to the ceasefire terms, citing "technical" reasons for delay in sharing the names. Reports from local media outlets including Quds News Network showed that, just over an hour before the ceasefire was scheduled to take effect, displaced Palestinians began returning to the Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza. Meanwhile, the United Nations' Deputy Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Muhannad Hadi said on Sunday that humanitarian aid teams had been ramping up preparations to leverage the opportunity for large-scale relief efforts.
