Gaza Strip: Israeli military actions continue hours before ceasefire deal takes effect
Israeli military actions in the Gaza Strip continued in the last couple of hours before the Israel-Hamas ceasefire agreement was to take effect, resulting in more casualties on Palestinians. Israel and Hamas have reached a ceasefire-for-hostage release deal following intensive mediation efforts by Qatar, Egypt and the United States. It was announced on Wednesday and is set to take effect at 08:30 local time on Sunday. Just a day before the ceasefire, Israeli military operations in Gaza continued, resulting in serious casualties. Israeli airstrikes hit various parts of northern, central, and southern Gaza. The Gaza-based health authorities said on Saturday that at least 23 Palestinians were killed in Israeli bombardment, with 83 injured over the past 24 hours. Since the ceasefire agreement was announced, Israeli attacks have killed at least 139 people and wounded 348. Also on Saturday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the agreement in a video statement as a "temporary measure" and emphasized Israel's right to resume military operations, if necessary. As his first comment on Wednesday's ceasefire, Netanyahu emphasized the need for a substantial increase in the number of hostages held in Gaza to be released during the first phase of the agreement, adding that most of the 33 Israeli hostages, who are due to be released starting Sunday in the first phase of the agreement, are alive. Netanyahu stated that Israel will maintain a military presence in the Philadelphi Corridor between Gaza and Egypt, adding, "Not only will we not reduce the forces there, we will even increase them a little." Earlier in the day, Netanyahu said that Israel would not proceed with the ceasefire until it has received the initial list of hostages to be released by Hamas. He warned that Israel would bear zero tolerance over the violations of the agreement which Hamas would take full responsibility for. The Israeli side believes that over 90 of the 251 individuals taken hostage during the October 7, 2023 attack remain in Gaza, with 34 already dead. The first phase of the ceasefire agreement is centered around an exchange of hostages. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced Saturday the completion of their preparations to receive the released hostages and will provide comprehensive support, including medical care and facilitating their reunions with their families.
