Peru: Lima marks 490th founding anniversary
Lima, Peru - January 18, 2025 [Note: partially no sound] Lima, the capital of Peru, celebrated the 490th anniversary of its founding on Saturday with a jubilant array of festivities that demonstrated the deep-rooted traditions and modern charm of this vibrant city. The celebrations began with a lively parade that set off from the Park of the Wall (Parque de La Muralla) and culminated at Lima's historic Plaza Mayor, home to the Government Palace. The event featured a rich mix of activities, from colorful processions and traditional dances to rock music performances and the iconic Peruvian Paso horse show, highlighting the ancient capital's diverse cultural heritages and enduring significance. "[Lima] was once [one of] the most important capitals in the Americas. It represents the essence of Peru, which is a fusion of our Inca ancestors, ancient Peruvian civilization, and Spanish culture. Today, Lima is a metropolis with a population of over 11 million," said Miguel Molinari, a representative of the Culture Department of Metropolitan Municipality of Lima. For locals, the anniversary was a moment to honor the city's rich gastronomy, enchanting landmarks, and the warmth of its people. "Lima boasts a wealth of gourmet, tourist attractions, and hospitable people who always open their arms to welcome everyone," said Gisela Garcia, a Lima resident. The history of Lima dates back to early 1535. Every January 18 marks the city's founding anniversary. On this day, Lima, known as the "City of Kings," comes alive and dresses up in celebration, paying tribute to its people and their legacy. SHOTLIST: Lima, Peru - Jan 18, 2025 1.
