STORYLINE:

The Israel-Hamas ceasefire agreement in Gaza came into effect on Sunday, after more than 15 months of deadly strikes.

STANDUP 1 (Arabic): MOHAMMED ODWAN, Xinhua reporter in Gaza
"Finally, a ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel has come into effect, ending a 15-month war that has claimed the lives of more than 46,000 Palestinians and wounded nearly 110,000 others. We are standing here on the outskirts of the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip, which has been rocked by explosions resulting from Israeli military operations in this area for more than half a year. The situation seems calmer now, and local residents gradually return to their homes to check their losses before returning to live in this city."

STANDUP 2 (English): OHOOD AL-JAGHOUB, Xinhua reporter in Ramallah
"In an initial gesture, Hamas released three Israeli hostages via the International Red Cross, in exchange for 90 Palestinian prisoners. The deal, mediated by Qatar, Egypt, and the U.S. that faced many delays, will allow vital humanitarian aid to reach Gaza, where Palestinians have endured extreme shortages of food, water, and shelter amid relentless Israeli bombardments.
In Gaza, residents returned to find widespread devastation, with over 70% of housing units completely or partially destroyed. Hospitals remain overwhelmed, and bodies are still being recovered. The deal provides a brief moment of relief but highlights the immense suffering endured by Palestinians who now face the challenge of rebuilding after widespread destruction."

SOUNDBITE 1 (Arabic): ABU MOHAMMED, Palestinian resident in Gaza
"I feel happy that we got rid of the occupation and suffering despite the martyrs, the wounded and the suffering. I am very happy that the displaced will return to their homes and, God willing, the ceasefire will continue."

SOUNDBITE 2 (Arabic): IBRAHIM ABDUL GHANI, Palestinian resident in Gaza
"My feeling of joy cannot be described because of the ceasefire and I hope that peace will prevail in all areas of the Gaza Strip."
