Lebanon: Palestinians in Lebanon celebrate Gaza ceasefire
Beirut, Lebanon - January 19, 2025 Storyline: Hundreds of Palestinian refugees in Bourj al-Barajneh, Beirut's largest Palestinian refugee camp, took to the streets on Saturday to celebrate the ceasefire deal in Gaza after over 470 days of intense Israeli military attacks on the enclave. The rallies came after Hamas's call for refugee camps across Lebanon to commemorate the truce agreement and the victory of resistance. Demonstrators waved flags, chanted slogans, and held portraits of late leaders, including Hezbollah's Hassan Nasrallah and Hamas's Yahya Sinwar, both killed in Israeli attacks last fall. In the wake of bloodshed, Sakhamini called on the Palestinian leadership and people to implement the consensus reached in a pivotal reconciliation dialogue in Beijing in July last year. Excitement ran high among the crowds. Ahmad Taha, a Palestinian refugee in Lebanon, celebrated the victory, hailing the great sacrifices made by martyrs and expressing hope for the liberation of all of Palestine. The Israel-Hamas ceasefire agreement in Gaza came into effect on Sunday after more than 15 months of deadly conflict. The deal, brokered by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States, was set to begin at 8:30 local time, but Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the military to continue strikes until Hamas provided a list of hostages. Hamas released names of the first three female hostages later that day, citing technical reasons for the delay in naming the detainees. During this delay, the Israeli military continued its airstrikes and artillery attacks in Gaza, killing at least eight people, according to Palestinian health authorities.
