Dismayed Palestinians find homes in ruins upon returning to Rafah
Gaza - January 19, 2025 Storyline: Thousands of displaced Palestinians from the southern Gaza Strip city of Rafah have discovered their former homes left in utter ruins after they started returning to the city as the Israel-Hamas ceasefire agreement finally came into effect on Sunday. Residents began to return to Rafah for the first time after the six-week-long ceasefire was implemented on Sunday following more than 15 months of devastating conflict. They had been forced to leave their homes when the Israeli army ordered evacuations. Despite relief at the halt in fighting, there was a sense of shock and anger evident among the Palestinians who were arriving back in Rafah. Many had hoped to return to their homes but instead found only piles of rubble and widespread destruction. While the Rafah municipality has started efforts to re-pave and re-open the heavily damaged roads which had been closed, the city appears largely uninhabitable due to the horrific destruction brought by airstrikes that has flattened whole neighborhoods and crippled infrastructure. Additionally, dozens of trucks carrying humanitarian aid and fuel entered the Gaza Strip on Sunday for the first time from Egypt after Israel had previously restricted the entry of aid during its military operations in Gaza.
