Escalator goes haywire and bares its razor-sharp teeth in Bangkok
An escalator went haywire and exposed its razor-sharp teeth at a shopping mall in Thailand.
The moving steps collapsed with a loud crack near the top platform on the second floor of Lotus's along the Rama 4 road in Bangkok on January 18 evening.
Police arrived at the scene and found the upper section of the escalator had folded, baring the sharp and jagged edges of its dislodged comb plates.
Bits of yellow debris were scattered near the steps, which have been cordoned off by mall staff.
Authorities said no one was harmed in the incident. The cause of the malfunction was believed to be a coin that fell into the escalator mechanism.
In a statement, the mall said: 'We are conducting a detailed inspection and fixing the escalator until it is fit to be used again. We place the highest importance on the safety of all customers and users by inspecting the operation of every escalator in every branch according to international standards.'
In June 2023, a Thai woman lost her leg when it was caught in a moving walkway at Bangkok's Don Mueang International Airport.
Medics had to perform an emergency amputation to free her.
Authorities said a collapsed plate had caused the accident. The moving walkways at the airport were suspended from service for an inspection following the incident.
