STORYLINE:
A Chinese New Year temple fair was held on Sunday in Nairobi, Kenya's capital.
Organized by Chinese companies operating in Kenya, the event featured lion and dragon dances, kung fu performances, and a variety of culinary delights.
Government officials, diplomats, business executives and scholars graced the event.
SOUNDBITE 1 (English): UMMI BASHIR, Kenyan principal secretary for culture, arts and heritage
"We're very excited today, basically to celebrate and welcome this year together with our friends from China. We have extensive collaborations between ourselves and the People's Republic of China on matters (including) libraries. We partner when it comes to languages and also try to educate each other and appreciate the libraries and also the museums that we have in both countries."
Many participants were impressed by the cultural performances and exquisite Chinese cuisine.
SOUNDBITE 2 (English): VRATT ZADRA, Participant
"I'm here to experience the Chinese New Year and to see the multicultural diversity we have in Kenya. They're very simple, they have very diverse ways of food. You can see I'm holding something very fancy here and it has a lot of fruit and looks good. And I also watched the kung fu show. I love the drums and the dragon (dance), so it's good to see all this culture. We can experience them in Kenya by not even going to China."
SOUNDBITE 3 (English): BRITNEY WANGUI, Participant
"I've seen the dragon dance, it was like a dragon or something. And also there was this lady hula-hooping with like a hundred hula hoops. And I was like, wow, that's nice, that's interesting. And also I've seen different foods. I haven't tried them, though, yet, but they look tantalizing."
SOUNDBITE 4 (English): ANNE CIKU, Participant
"Apparently I've also learned that it's the Year of the Snake. Snake represents wisdom, so it's nice learning that."
SOUNDBITE 5 (English): ROBERT GITONGA, Participant
"The food is nice, dances, sometimes chilly food, but they have a nice variety of food."
Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Nairobi.
