A playful beluga whale nudged the back of its keeper to ask for attention.

Footage shows the 12-year-old marine mammal named Xiao Liuliu emerging from the pool behind worker Du Wulin and lightly poking him in Jiangxi, China on January 16.

Xiao Liuliu opened its mouth as the staff member patted the bump on its face.

The sea animal repeatedly called his attention while sitting on the edge of the pool, fixing a gear.

Caretaker Du said: 'Xio Liuliu was very impatient. It wants to play with me.'

Beluga whales are often described as affectionate and highly social animals. They display behaviours that suggest they form strong bonds with each other and can even interact positively with humans.
