US, Los Angeles: Simi Valley Shots Fired Suspect Barricaded Inside Home
Los Angeles, United States - January 19, 2025 01/19/2025 04:55 pm (GMT-0800) SIMI VALLEY, Calif. – Simi Valley police officers were engaged in an hourslong standoff with an armed individual who reportedly fired multiple shots with a rifle inside a community. The incident unfolded at approximately 1:40 p.m. in the 1500 block of Rory Lane in Simi Valley. According to the Simi Valley Police Department (SVPD) in a community report on Nixle, a 911 caller reported hearing four to five gunshots and the sound of arguing coming from Unit #37. While en route to the area, a male contacted the police department, identifying himself as the resident of Unit #37. According to the SVPD, the resident reported that his adult son was discharging an assault-type weapon inside the residence and firing toward neighboring homes. Upon arrival, officers determined the man had been locked out of his home by his son. At that time, the father informed officers that his son had access to multiple firearms within the residence. Officers secured the area and contained the mobile home, but the suspect refused to exit, prompting the next level of resources to the area. By 5:15 p.m., the SVPD SWAT team, the Ventura County Sheriff's Office (VCSO) SWAT team, the Crisis Negotiations Team, Tactical Dispatch and SVPD detectives were still on the scene. The SVPD reported that the negotiations with the suspect spanned several hours but were ultimately unsuccessful. The sheriff's office Bomb Squad was next to arrive after the suspect made statements suggesting the possible presence of bomb-making materials inside the residence. Ultimately, SWAT deployed CS gas into the residence, resulting in the surrender of the suspect without further incident. The suspect, identified by SVPD as Jason Dery, was treated for a significant self-inflicted laceration to his left arm. Following medical treatment, he was transported to the Ventura County Main Jail, where he was booked on charges of "shooting at an inhabited dwelling" and "resisting or delaying arrest," according to the SVPD. There were no individuals struck by gunfire during the incident.
