Sakurajima volcano erupts sending ash clouds over towns in Japan
The Sakurajima volcano erupted, sending ash clouds over towns in Japan on January 19.
Dramatic timelapse footage shows the volcano releasing a plume of ash 2,000 metres above the crater around 3:26 pm in Kagoshima on Sunday.
Authorities confirmed this as the 15th explosive eruption of the year, continuing intense volcanic activity at the site. Dense volcanic smoke was seen drifting eastward.
Sakurajima is one of Japan's most active volcanoes, with a history of frequent eruptions. Originally an island, it became a peninsula after a significant eruption in 1914.
Japan lies along the Pacific 'Ring of Fire' where the majority of Earth's volcano eruptions and earthquakes happen.
