Gaza Strip - January 18, 2025 The Palestinian death toll from Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip had risen to 47,035, with 111,091 others injured, the Gaza-based health ministry said in a statement on Monday. On Monday local time, the Palestinian side reported that Israeli snipers opened fire at two locations in the southern Gaza city of Rafah. The incident resulted in the deaths of three civilians, including two children, and left 10 others injured. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that several Palestinians attempted to approach Israeli forces near Rafah, posing a "threat" to the troops. In response, the IDF opened fire. The IDF also noted that they have maintained a "security zone" in accordance with the Israel-Hamas ceasefire agreement. At 11:15 local time (0915 GMT), the Israeli military ordered its units in Gaza to cease fire, marking the start of the truce brokered after about a year of mediation. Since the escalation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in October 2023, the crisis in the Gaza Strip has persisted for over 15 months. Multiple sets of data released by the United Nations indicate that most of the Gaza Strip has been reduced to ruins. The ongoing conflict and blockade have resulted in a severe and multifaceted humanitarian crisis. The United Nations' report released on Jan 16 said that approximately 90 percent of the population in the Gaza Strip has been displaced, with many forced to relocate "around 10 times or more". Over a million people are living in makeshift tents, struggling to survive while facing threats from winter's cold temperatures, heavy rain, and strong winds. There is an urgent need for emergency shelters and basic living supplies. The report shows that approximately 436,000 housing units in the Gaza Strip have been affected by the conflict, accounting for 92 percent of all housing in the region. Sixty percent of the buildings have been damaged by Israeli military actions, with infrastructure severely impacted, leaving "most of Gaza in ruins". Hunger continues to loom over the Gaza Strip, as the conflict has destroyed large swathes of farmland, leaving local food production and processing on the verge of collapse. Most food supply channels have also ceased operations. According to the World Food Programme, over two million people in the Gaza Strip have lost their sources of income and are now entirely dependent on food aid. The Israel-Hamas ceasefire agreement, brokered by Qatar, Egypt and the United States, came into effect in Gaza on Sunday. The three-phase agreement is aimed at a "permanent ceasefire between the parties", according to the mediators. The first stage, which lasts for 42 days, includes a ceasefire, the withdrawal and redeployment of Israeli forces outside densely populated areas, the release of hostages and exchange of prisoners and detainees, the exchange of the remains of the deceased, the return of internally displaced persons to their places of residence in Gaza, and facilitating the departure of patients and the wounded to receive treatment, as well as intensifying the safe and effective entry and distribution of humanitarian aid on a large scale throughout the Gaza Strip.
