China: A Clever Orangutan Uses a Stick to Eat an Orange Given by Visitors
Huzhou, China - November 07, 2024 At the orangutan enclosure in the zoo, there’s a small slit in the glass for visitors to feed the animals. A child first squeezed milk through the slit, and the orangutans immediately rushed over, even licking up every last drop that spilled on the ground. Afterward, the kids stuffed a few pieces of biscuits through the slit. When they started feeding oranges, however, the fruit was too big to fit through the opening. The children could only wedge the oranges in the slit. Inside the enclosure, one of the orangutans was holding a small stick. Every time the children wedged an orange in place, the orangutan skillfully used the stick to pry pieces of the orange out. At the end of the video, the camera pans to reveal another orangutan standing nearby, watching with a forlorn expression as it couldn’t get any food. This footage was filmed by Ms. Pan, in Changxing, Huzhou, Zhejiang, at 13:32, on November 7, 2024. The uploader commented: "While passing by the orangutan enclosure, we saw two particularly funny orangutans. The kids eagerly took out their food to feed them. One of the orangutans was more dominant and incredibly clever, completely monopolizing the feeding window. Somehow, it had found a twig and kept using it to fish out food. Just as it was about to succeed, it would even bite the stick to help secure the food. It was so entertaining that the children couldn’t stop laughing at the smart orangutan. The other orangutan seemed more timid, quietly standing to the side with a helpless look on its face as it watched the food it couldn’t reach. The entire process of feeding the orangutans was so delightful—orangutans are just incredibly intelligent!"
