Woman spots orcas for the first time after chasing sightings for close to two years
This is the moment a woman spotted orcas for the first time after chasing sightings of the majestic marine mammals for almost two years.
Olivia Jane Isabella Mackay, 24, had dedicated months to the search, often spending hours perched on clifftops with her partner Jordan Crowe, 27.
Olivia's dream finally became reality when she was able to catch a glimpse of the animals off the coast of Orkney earlier this month.
Footage shows Olivia screaming with excitement as she spots two male orcas gliding through the North Sea, marking the culmination of a dream she'd been chasing for almost two years.
Olivia, of Eyemouth, Scotland said: "I couldn't believe it. "
"It was life changing."
"After all that time searching, we randomly walked to a spot and there they were."
"It was surreal. I was crying and screaming."
Olivia determination to find orcas was driven by her fascination with Scotland's wildlife.
Olivia said: "I've seen dolphins, minke whales and other animals but orcas felt almost mythical."
"I just had to see them in the wild. "
"It became an obsession."
Olivia began her search for the "mythical" mammals in May 2023. "
Her quest took her and her partner to Scotland's northernmost coasts several times.
The couple travelled around Caithness, where they visited up to six different towns.
They also spent weeks on the Isle of Mull hoping to spot two famous orcas named John Coe and Aquarius.
Olivia said: "We probably travelled three to four times a month."
"Sometimes, we'd drive 10 hours to stay for just a day or two before heading back."
"It was a huge commitment but the camper van made it manageable."
"Without it, the cost would have been overwhelming."
Olivia and Jordan had joined an informal community of orca enthusiasts, who track sightings and share tips.
After hearing reports of orca sightings near Orkney Islands over several consecutive days, the couple made the last-minute decision travel to the archipelago.
The couple drove for 7 hours to Gills Bay and took a ferry to Orkney where shortly after they arrived stumbled upon the animals at a remote clifftop called Hoxa Head known for orca sightings.
Olivia said: "We were walking among abandoned buildings when Jordan suggested we go to one last spot."
"And Jordan suddenly shouted. "
"I didn't see them at first but I started filming just in case and there they were."
"I cried my eyes out."
Jordan, an agricultural worker and hobby photographer, had previously seen orcas, but it was Olivia's first wild encounter.
Olivia said: "Jordan was jumping up and down. "
"He was so happy I finally got to see them after all the waiting."
"They're Scotland's greatest treasure."
"I think many people don't realize how special it is to have killer whales right here in our waters."
