India: Mother, cub sloth bear rescued from farm well after marathon operation
Tamil Nadu, India - January 18, 2025 A mother and cub sloth bears were successfully rescued from a concrete well after they fell into it while roaming through tea plantations. The bears were rescued from a well that belongs to a village panchayat in Kotagiri town, in the Nilgiris district in southern India’s Tamil Nadu on January 18. Visuals show two bears trapped in a concrete wall with a two-foot gap. The fire rescue team is standing on the top of a motor room and sliding two conjoined ladders through the two-foot gap. The cub climbs and exits the well followed by its mother. The locals and rescue team cheer as the bears safely exit the well. The bears make a quick escape into the nearby tea plantations. Speaking to Newslions, S. Selvaraj, Forest Range Officer, Kotagiri, mentioned that a local villager called the rescue team after hearing the noises of sloth bears from the well. The rescue team promptly reached the spot. The ladders were facilitated through the gap to let the bears come out on their own. After almost three hours, the bears were successfully rescued without any injuries due to the timely intervention of the rescue team. Forest Department personnel were involved in the process of sending both bears into the forest area. We have secured the footages from S. Selvaraj, Forest Range Officer, Kotagiri Range, Tamil Nadu.
