STORYLINE:
With 2024 confirmed as the warmest year on record, positive action from all countries is required to prevent global warming, a Spanish climate expert told Xinhua in an interview on Tuesday.
According to an analysis led by NASA scientists, Earth's average surface temperature in 2024 was the warmest on record. Global temperatures in 2024 were 1.28 degrees Celsius above the agency's 20th-century baseline (1951-1980).

"Each country must work independently to achieve significant emissions reductions, as collective efforts are crucial for stabilizing global temperatures and minimizing warming.
The rising temperatures we are witnessing have immediate impacts on natural components of the climate system, such as the ocean and biosphere, as well as on socioeconomic systems.
Over the past two years, marine heatwaves have become a pressing issue, with significant temperature increases observed in the North Atlantic, North Pacific, and Mediterranean Sea, causing harm to the biosphere and ecosystems.
If we tell our neighbors that nothing can be done, they will do nothing. What we need now is decisive, meaningful action. Sustainable Development Goal explicitly calls for climate action. It's time to act."
