STORYLINE:

Fireworks are an integral part of celebrations in China.

As the Chinese New Year is approaching, fireworks sales in China have entered peak season.

It's also the busiest time for 50-year-old Chen Jian, a veteran fireworks designer in Nanchang, east China's Jiangxi Province.

In his eyes, designing a fabulous show of fireworks is the same as composing.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): CHEN JIAN, Technical manager, Jiangxi Lidu Fireworks Group Co., Ltd.
"The design of a fireworks show is like writing an essay. We have to spend time conceiving. Through calculating the time and angles of displaying the fireworks, we can achieve what we want."

Engaging in fireworks design for over two decades, Chen has upgraded the fireworks display by involving computer programming, drones and other scientific and technological tools.

SOUNDBITE 2 (Chinese): CHEN JIAN, Technical manager, Jiangxi Lidu Fireworks Group Co., Ltd.
"We have a propellant down here, and on the upper layer, lies the gunpowder of effect. The propellant is first ignited. As the propellant is at the bottom of the barrel, it will produce a lot of gas through the chemical reaction of the combustion, and then the gas will pass through this barrel to send the fireworks shell into the sky."

SOUNDBITE 3 (Chinese): CHEN JIAN, Technical manager, Jiangxi Lidu Fireworks Group Co., Ltd.
"High-altitude fireworks can display a variety of shapes, like this five-pointed star, butterflies, smiling faces and footprints.
The fireworks industry is an industry that brings joy to everyone. It's usually our busiest time when others are having a holiday. Currently, we have been preparing for the upcoming Spring Festival."
