Switzerland: WEF president optimistic of China's economic prospects
Davos, Switzerland - January 20, 2025 The president of the World Economic Forum (WEF) expressed optimism about China's economic prospects, citing the country's strong resilience and medium- to long-term potential, during an interview in Davos, Switzerland on Monday. WEF President Borge Brende praised China's commitment to multilateralism, referencing President Xi Jinping's 2017 speech on global cooperation, during an interview with China Global Television Network (CGTN) on the sidelines of the WEF Annual Meeting. While acknowledging that China's economy faces some short-term challenges, Brende pointed out that the Chinese government has introduced a series of measures to stimulate domestic consumption, which have effectively boosted the economy. The Annual Meeting 2025 of the WEF kicked off on Monday under the theme "Collaboration for the Intelligent Age." Shotlist: Davos, Switzerland - Jan 20, 2025: 1. We really appreciated a lot President Xi Jinping's speech in 2017, here in Davos, where he underlined that we are all in the same boat, and even in the more multipolar world, we have to keep multilateralism. It is important when they are more key players, they should abide to some key rules. And I think that was a strong message. We also then having Vice Premier, Mr. Ding here in Davos and I think we will have hopefully the same kind of message."; [SHOTS OVERLAYING SOUNDBITE] FILE: Geneva, Switzerland - Date Unknown 5. SOUNDBITE (English) Borge Brende, president, World Economic Forum (WEF) (partially overlaid with shots 10-15): "So in the medium-long term, I'm quite optimistic on China's development and economy. It is true that in the short term, China also has to adjust, and I think China is doing that. There is stimulus now from the central government, I think there is a focus also on increasing the demand among consumers. Structural reform is now also the basis for future success. And of course China has a clear plan for this. So, we do expect five percent economic growth for China this year. That's not bad compared to what we're seeing, for example, in Europe, where we're seeing one percent economic growth."; [SHOTS OVERLAYING SOUNDBITE] FILE: China - Date Unknown 10.
