releasing an Amazonian stingray

Buy video

Here, deep in the Amazon rainforest, freshwater rays like this ocellated stingray often get trapped in ox bow lakes. They have to wait for the wet season to be connected back to the main river system. They are beautiful creatures, but potentially lethal. They come armed with a 4 to 6 inch venomous barb, which they use to defend themselves. Fisherman have no access to hospitals here, so fear these fish when caught in their nets. They cut the tails off to avoid a nasty sting. A sting would cause excruciating pain, and sometimes even death! This one was lucky enough to be put back, tail intact, to live and fight another day
