A rare formation of pancake ice floated on Lake Michigan in Chicago.

Stunning footage by Lorena Lim captures the mesmerising natural phenomenon, which formed along the shoreline on January 19.

Pancake ice is a type of ice formation found in cold, polar waters. It consists of flat, round plates of ice with raised edges resembling the shape of pancakes. This phenomenon occurs when small ice pieces collide and freeze in calm waters, typically when the water temperature is just below freezing.
