A massive landslide buried homes in Indonesia this morning, leaving at least two residents feared dead.

Dramatic footage shows emergency responders and volunteers recovering the bodies of a married couple, Tapang, 77, and Liku, 70, after they were trapped in the rockslide in Lembang Sarambu, Buntu Pepasan District, North Toraja Regency, early Thursday morning, January 23.

Authorities reported that the disaster also left two others injured, Agustina Arrang, 83, and her granddaughter, Rosmawati Misi, 28, who were asleep when the devastating landslide struck.

Their house was swept away and later found at the edge of a river. The two survivors are currently receiving treatment at Elim Rantepao Hospital.

In total, six homes, including three traditional residences, were damaged.

The landslide also disrupted the road linking Lembang Sarambu to Sapan Subdistrict, with the Pepasan dead end completely blocked, making it impassable to vehicles.

Indonesia and some neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia have been experiencing monsoon season, which brings soaring temperatures followed by powerful afternoon rainstorms, leading to widespread flash floods.

Landslides are common in the country, particularly during the rainy season. The risk is further exacerbated by deforestation and illegal mining activities in remote areas.
