Colombia - January 23, 2025 The streets of Tibú, a municipality in Norte de Santander (Colombia), have once again become a refuge for thousands of people fleeing violence between ELN guerrillas and FARC dissidents. Of the 38,000 displaced people from the Catatumbo region, 5,300 are now in Tibú, with others seeking refuge in Cúcuta and Ocaña. Temporary shelters such as the Seminario Menor house families who have fled in fear, telling harrowing stories of sleepless nights and hasty escapes. ‘We lived two days in silence inside the house, terrified to turn on the lights,’ one woman told EFE, as children chanted “We want peace” in the background. Military evacuations and humanitarian relief efforts are underway, providing food, mattresses and hygiene kits to the displaced. However, the situation remains serious as violence and insecurity persist, forcing more families to flee their homes in search of safety. Camera: MARIO CAICEDO.
