Türkiye - January 22, 2025 Funerals have been held to mourn the dead from Tuesday's ski resort fire in Bolu Province, Türkiye, gathering friends and families of the victims and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who declared a national day of mourning on Wednesday. The death toll from the fire at the Grand Kartal Hotel in Kartalkaya, a ski resort in Bolu, has risen to 78, Turkish Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc said Thursday. The fire broke out at the wooden-clad 12-storey Grand Kartal Hotel in Bolu at in the early hours of Tuesday during a busy holiday period when 234 people were staying there. It took 12 hours for the firefighters to put out. Suna Basaran, a friend of a victim, recounted the moment she realized her neighbor was missing in an interview with the China Global Television Network. Workers from nearby hotels also witnessed the fire in horror. The tragedy has sent shockwaves across the nation, with reports saying that the fire alarms didn't go off and sufficient safety measures were lacking. Meanwhile, DNA tests are underway to confirm the identification of the victims. Eleven people, including the hotel owner, the deputy mayor of Bolu Province, and the head of the municipality's fire department, have been detained as part of the investigation. In the morning, we woke up unaware that they had stayed overnight. When we saw news of the fire, we wondered if they were still there. After we called and couldn't reach them, we realized they had stayed at the hotel. They were my neighbors for 25 years. Our children grew up together. We are so sad. We never expected something like this. I don't even know what to say."; [SHOT OVERLAYING SOUNDBITE] 7. Photo of victim; [SHOT OVERLAYING SOUNDBITE] 8. Aerial shot of hotel after fire; 9.
