STORYLINE:

The vibrant sounds of drums, the powerful strokes of Shaolin kung fu, and the dazzling acrobatic stunts painted a cultural tapestry as Kenya hosted a Spring Festival gala on Wednesday night.

The event, part of the "Henan (China) Spring Festival Overseas Gala: Africa Tour," brought the rich traditions of the Asian nation to life, captivating a crowd that included high-ranking Kenyan officials, a delegation from central China's Henan Province, representatives of Chinese enterprises, and students eager to experience the magic of Chinese heritage.

Rebecca Miano, cabinet secretary in Kenya's Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife, said Kenya considers culture as one of the most critical elements of human endeavor and has prioritized cultural immersion to showcase to tourists.

"I'm very impressed at the skills they have. They're specialized. They have mastered their culture. And this is a very big lesson for us in Kenya. We are promoting cultural tourism. And this is just to showcase how big it can become. You're aware especially in 2024, we have had very big cultural festivals that are gaining attraction. Being here has given us even more motivation and we want to invite many many more Chinese nationals to come to Kenya to see what we have."

SOUNDBITE 2 (English): BEATRICE KIVINDYO, Guest
"I like to enjoy the culture because I'm learning the language. I want to get to experience the culture. And, coming here and seeing them perform, that is so amazing."

SOUNDBITE 3 (English): ABIGAEL WAMBUA, Guest
"I think today is a really great opportunity to view the Chinese culture because we learn about Chinese. So it was a good opportunity for us to engage with people from China and see how they celebrate their events. It was really fun and mind-blowing, especially the performances."

SOUNDBITE 4 (English): MICHELLE HANNAH, Guest
"What enticed me and what I loved about this are the dances and the costumes. They look so amazing and I'd like to attend more and more of these events. Their dances are well performed, well planned. Yeah, I just love them."
