Record-breaking winds from Storm Éowyn have battered Ireland and Northern Ireland on Friday, causing widespread disruption. Over 560,000 homes and businesses are without power, and hundreds of flights have been cancelled, along with the closure of schools and public transport.
Officials had warned that this storm could be one of the most dangerous ever faced, urging people to stay indoors. The Irish weather agency, Met Eireann, reported a gust of 182 km/h overnight at Mace Head in County Galway, which has provisionally broken an 80-year wind speed record.
ESB Networks, the energy provider for Ireland, has said that "unprecedented" damage to its network has led to these outages and expects more significant power disruptions as the storm moves north. They have warned that it could take up to nine days to restore power for some customers.
Dublin Airport has also been heavily affected, with more than 110 departures and 110 arrivals cancelled, and further cancellations or delays may follow.
Cllr Marie Casserly comments: "It’s record-breaking winds in Sligo and throughout Ireland, stay safe everyone."
