Manila lit its symbolic "Prosperity Tree" on Friday night to kick off festivities for the coming Chinese New Year.

"This ceremony will be a momentous event as we gear toward the celebration of Chinese New Year, or the Year of the Wood Snake, which symbolizes transformation and embracing change. This year's theme encourages us to be grateful for our growth as a city and welcomes new beginnings with open hearts and minds. Tonight, when we have lighted our tree, this is just not an ordinary tree, but the contemporary art installation that represents hope, luck, and blessings for the new year."
This year's Spring Festival falls on Jan. 29.
The city government of Manila has prepared various Spring Festival activities including a countdown on Jan. 28 and a grand parade on Jan. 29.
