The 87th Tata Steel Chess Tournament reached its 7th round on Saturday in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands.
Key matchups in this round are expected to have a major impact on standings in the competition.
Only one game in the Masters section ended decisively during Friday's sixth round, with Alexey Sarana of Russia defeating compatriot Vladimir Fedoseev.
Meanwhile, Indian prodigy Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa continues to lead in the standings.
In the seventh round, defending champion Wei Yi of China takes on Leon Luke Mendonca of India in a highly anticipated battle. Dutch grandmaster and 2021 champion Jorden van Foreest will face tournament leader Praggnanandhaa.
In the Challengers section, rising star Lu Miaoyi of China is set to compete with Dutch grandmaster Benjamin Bok.
This year's Masters tournament features five of the world's top 10 chess players. Among them is the newly crowned world champion, Dommaraju Gukesh of India. Gukesh fell to China's Wei Yi in last year's final.
The tournament officially commenced on January 17 and is scheduled to conclude on February 2, 2025.
