Hope and anticipation fill the air in Gaza City. Though peace feels fragile in the war-ravaged region, it is making a return.
Thousands of people who were displaced to southern Gaza are finally on their way home.
On the city's outskirts, families gather as they clean their homes and prepare to reunite with loved ones scattered across the region.
In Gaza, people come together to clear the streets. Volunteers remove large pieces of concrete, broken glass, and twisted metal with their hands and with any tool they could find.
On Jan. 15, Israel and Hamas agreed to a Gaza ceasefire-for-hostages deal after intensive mediation efforts by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States.
The agreement is divided into three phases. Thirty-three Israeli hostages will be released in the first phase, which will last for 42 days. Israel will free over 1,890 Palestinian prisoners during the same period.
The first stage of the six-week ceasefire took effect on Jan. 19.
