Dozens of volcanic earthquakes rattled Kanlaon Volcano as it spewed ash in the Philippines.

Time-lapse footage shows the volcano belching clouds of steam and smoke on Negros Island, on January 25.

State seismological agency PHIVOLCS logged 35 volcanic earthquakes up to 38 minutes long as the volcano emitted 2,413 tonnes of sulfur dioxide. The plumes shot up to 3,000 ft into the sky, the agency reported.

Volcano Alert Level 3 remains in effect, indicating that magma is near the surface and could escalate into further explosive eruptions.

Kanlaon, an 8,100ft stratovolcano that straddles the provinces of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental, has been spewing ash and sulfur dioxide at increased rates since it erupted in June.

Its last magmatic eruption was in 1902.

Locals are advised to evacuate within a 6-km radius of the volcano's summit.

The Philippines is an archipelago of more than 7,000 islands inside the Pacific 'Ring of Fire' where the majority of Earth's volcano eruptions and earthquakes happen.
