Colombia: Colombia resolves diplomatic standoff with USA
Colombia - January 27, 2025 Colombia announced on Sunday the resolution of a diplomatic impasse with the United States caused by President Gustavo Petro's decision to block two deportation flights until the deportees were treated with dignity. Colombian Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo confirmed that the matter had been resolved and announced plans for high-level talks in Washington in the coming days. Both countries reached an agreement to re-establish diplomatic communication and resolve outstanding issues. However, the United States warned that visa restrictions and inspections would remain until the first deportation flight successfully returned to Colombia. (Camera: JUAN DIEGO LÓPEZ). TRANSLATION: Official statement. The Colombian Government reports that we have overcome the impasse with the United States Government. In this context, Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo and Ambassador Daniel García-Peña will travel to Washington, D.C., in the coming days to hold high-level meetings to follow up on the agreements, the result of joint work, and the exchange of diplomatic notes that took place today between the two governments. We will continue to receive Colombians who return as deportees, guaranteeing them dignified conditions, as citizens with rights. The Colombian Government, under the direction of President Gustavo Petro, has made the presidential plane available to facilitate the return of the compatriots who were due to arrive in the country this morning on deportation flights. Colombia confirms that diplomatic channels of communication will be maintained to guarantee the rights, the national interest and the dignity of our citizens.
