Rescue team free Indian man, 30, who had spent years chained up by mother
This is the moment an Indian man who his mother had chained up for years was freed by a rescue team.
Zaid, 30, had allegedly been suffering from mental health problems, before his mother locked him away in the Kharjana area of Indore, India.
He was finally rescued by the charity Sanstha Pravesh on January 24 when a concerned local told them about the victim
Upon reaching the location, just 100 metres from a local police station, the team found Zaid bound in heavy shackles attached to an old cart.
The young man was covered only in a towel and a plastic sheet, surrounded by filth and swarming flies.
His mother, Mumtaz, caused a commotion while releasing him, prompting police officers to intervene. She accused Zaid of practising black magic and said that was why she chained him.
The rescue group took the keys to the chains from his mum and attempted to unlock them, but the chains were rusted and would not open. The mother then allegedly fled the scene.
Dramatic footage shows authorities using a chisel and hammer to break the chains on his wrists and feet.
Police said the restraints allowed him to move around only within a five-square-foot area under the open sky.
Locals reported that Zaid often screamed in hunger, and passersby occasionally offered him food or water.
Residents also said that he often throws stones at people and abuses women.
A relative of the victim said that Zaid's father abandoned his mother around 15 years ago.
Zaid is currently admitted to a hospital in Banganga for people with psychological issues, where he is receiving treatment.
Authorities said he once aspired to be a vocalist and was a talented singer but suffered a head injury at the age of nine that exacerbated his mental health issues due to a lack of access to proper treatment.
