A hiker who suffered a broken hip while foraging survived eight days of being stranded in a Thai jungle.

Ftaher-of-two Chinawat Siriwong, 31, ventured into the forest to look for fruit, herbs, mushrooms and other wild bounties at Srinakarin Dam National Park in Kanchanaburi, Thailand, before being reported missing on January 16 before noon.

He was trying to climb up a tree but slipped off the bark, dislocating his hip and breaking the bone in his right leg in the fall.

The outdoorsman said he relied solely on water to sustain himself without food for more than a week while waiting for rescuers to find him.

Footage shows Chinawat sitting at the base of a tree, unable to move from his injuries and starvation on January 22.

When Chinawat was found, he said: 'I didn't think I would make it another night.'

Chinawat's family initially thought he had stayed out overnight and did not become concerned. But when he had not contacted them the next day, they grew alarmed and reported him missing.

A search operation was launched, and rescuers combed the dense forest to locate him. They finally found him eight days after he had initially left.

District official Neramit Luengaramfa said: 'We formed a team from the local government, the national park, and Pitak Kanchan Foundation to rescue him after we were notified.'

There were 35 volunteers in the search party, 20 who followed the hiking trail and another 15 in vehicles.

District official Neramit added: 'The team suspected that he might have wandered deep into the forest and became lost. When it was dark, we had to withdraw searching on the first day and try again on the next day.'

On the second day of searching on January 23, the officers gathered again and split into two groups until they found a plastic bag with rice hanging from a tree.

They eventually found Chinawat exhausted and dazed but could still communicate.

They took him to Somdech Phra Piyamaharaj Ramamaniyakhet Hospital for treatment. His condition was stable, but he remained under close supervision.

Chinawat said: 'I fell from the tree and I was injured, so I could not walk. My phone did not have any signal and then the battery finished.

'I ate the food I had gathered and drank rainwater from the ground. It was enough but I could not carry on like that. My leg was in pain.

'I am very thankful to the rescue team who saved me. They saved my life. Thanks to them my children still have their father.'
