Gaza Strip: Palestinian returns to Gaza halted as Israel, Hamas trade accusations over ceasefire breach
Gaza Strip - Recent The situation in Gaza remains tense as Hamas and Israel continue to accuse each other of violating the ceasefire agreement, with thousands of displaced Palestinians still waiting to return to their homes. The ceasefire agreement between the two sides was reached on January 19 after 15 months of intense fighting, following negotiations mediated by Egypt, Qatar and the United States. Last weekend, Hamas claimed that Israel was obstructing the return of displaced Palestinians to northern Gaza. In response, Israel accused Hamas of failing to release hostage Arbel Yehud as planned on Saturday. Thousands of displaced Palestinians had hoped to return to their homes, but the Israeli army did not withdraw from the region as expected, instead accusing Hamas of breaching the ceasefire, which further escalated tensions. Displaced Palestinians like Omar Halawa waited for hours at an Israeli military barrier in Wadi Gaza, attempting to cross a coastal road. Another displaced Palestinian, Amjad Sobh, dismantled his tent, packed his blankets and belongings, and loaded them onto his car in preparation to return to his destroyed home in Gaza. In an interview with China Global Television Network (CGTN), he expressed his feelings of powerlessness and frustration. The Israeli government, meanwhile, is demanding the release of Arbel Yehud, a civilian hostage, while Hamas claims she will be freed next weekend. As the standoff continues, mediators from Egypt and Doha are reportedly working to broker a resolution. For its part, Israel has stated that the suspension of its withdrawal from the Netzarim corridor will remain in place until mediators resolve the crisis. On Saturday, Hamas released four female Israeli soldiers in exchange for 200 Palestinian prisoners. Meanwhile, Gazans continue to spend another night in the streets, waiting for answers.
