A friendly whale shark floated over to scuba divers exploring a shipwreck site in Thailand.

Footage shows the baby marine animal swimming close to the group as they floated around the HTMS Chang wreck dive site in Trat on January 25.

The 16ft (5m) juvenile approached them near the surface where their boat was stopped.

Photographer Tharapong Talubnak, 45, said they were with Wayoon Diving Centre visitors when the baby whale shark appeared.

He added: 'We stopped and let it swim around us. We allowed the tourists to dive at the location, but the whale shark stayed with us.'

The friendly animal lingered in the area for half an hour, swimming with the group of tourists.

The diving site is near Koh Chang Island, accessible through a 20-minute boat ride.

The whale shark is a slow-moving, filter-feeding carpet shark and holds the title of the largest known extant fish species.

It is found in the open waters of all tropical oceans with a lifespan estimated to range from 80 to 130 years.
