Four relatives buried by landslide are rescued in Indonesia
This is the dramatic moment a mother and her children were rescued from a landslide that killed four others in Indonesia.
The earth crashed down nearby hillsides and buried two homes during heavy rain in Mamuju Regency, West Sulawesi, on Sunday night.
Officials said four relatives, including a one-month-old baby, were killed in the disaster.
They found another family trapped under debris before frantically dragging them to safety.
Taslim Sukirno, head of the regional disaster responses agency, said the landslide happened in Mamunyu village at around 11:15 pm local time after heavy rain hit the region for over eight hours.
He said: 'All the victims have been evacuated using stretchers and ambulances, and the injured are receiving intensive care at the Mamuju district hospital.'
The official said the government had employed personnel for evacuation, but the process was difficult because the landslide debris and fallen trees blocked the access.
The survivors were stable and taken to hospital for treatment.
Police Chief Herman Basir added: 'Four people died due to being buried by landslide material, while four others suffered serious injuries and were successfully evacuated.
The officer said the evacuation process was quite difficult because landslide material also covered the road, making it impossible for vehicles to pass.
He said: 'The road to the scene of the landslide cannot be passed by vehicles.
'Currently, officers are setting up an emergency post to support residents who need further assistance.'
Earlier, on January 17, more than 11,000 residents were displaced after storms destroyed bridges, houses, vehicles, and public facilities. Continuous heavy rainfall has forced families in some affected regions to evacuate.
In a separate incident on January 18 in Kuningan Regency, West Java, three houses collapsed due to erosion caused by prolonged rainfall.
Indonesia and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia have been experiencing the monsoon season, which typically brings soaring temperatures followed by intense afternoon rainstorms. These conditions have triggered widespread flash floods and landslides across the region.
