Fireworks illuminated the evening sky in Russia, marking 80 years since the lifting of the Siege of Leningrad.

Spectacular footage shows a colorful pyrotechnics display ignited over St Petersburg on January 27.

The event featured flower-laying ceremonies, themed exhibitions, and candlelight vigils.

A gun salute was performed from the Peter and Paul Fortress, and torches were lit on the Rostral Columns to commemorate the fallen soldiers and victims of the war.

The Siege of Leningrad, also known as the 900-Day Siege, was one of the longest and most destructive sieges in history, lasting for 872 days from September 8, 1941, to January 27, 1944, during World War II.

The siege was conducted by German and Finnish forces against the Soviet Union's city of Leningrad, now Saint Petersburg. Despite severe hardships, the city never fell to the Axis powers.

More than 1.5 million people died during the siege, with the majority of deaths caused by starvation.
