The French and US embassies in the Democratic Republic of Congo have been attacked by protesters on January 28.

The violence is in protest against alleged foreign involvement in destabilising the eastern part of the country.

Dramatic scenes unfolded in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, on Tuesday, February 28, as armed protesters attacked and set fire to the French and US embassies. The violence erupted between 11 a.m. Kinshasa time and 12 p.m. Eastern DRC time, as demonstrators protested against alleged foreign involvement in destabilizing the eastern part of the country.

Video captured by a local journalist Simon Katumba shows flames engulfing parts of the French embassy while protesters accuse France of supplying weapons to Rwanda, which they claim are being used to fuel conflict in the DRC.

At the US embassy, armed protesters were seen climbing onto the roof as the building was attacked and looted. Foreign affairs minister Jean-Noël Barrot confirmed the attack on the French embassy, stating on X that the fire has been brought under control, but called the acts "unacceptable."

These developments reflect growing frustration among Congolese citizens over perceived international complicity in the ongoing crisis in eastern DRC.
