Protests erupted in the Democratic Republic of the Congo on Tuesday morning amid anger at foreign interference said to be destabilising the country.

Armed mobs attacked and set fire to the French and U.S. embassies in the capital Kinshasa shortly before 11 am local time.

Footage captured by a local journalist Simon Katumba shows flames engulfing parts of the French embassy.

Demonstrators accuse France of supplying weapons to Rwanda, which they claim are being used to fuel conflict in the DRC.

At the U.S. embassy, rioters were seen climbing onto the roof as the building was attacked and looted.

Foreign affairs minister Jean-Noel Barrot confirmed the attack on the French embassy, stating that the fire has been brought under control.
