United States - January 22, 2025 A remote camera set up to monitor a neurological disorder in wild cats has captured something unexpected—footage of a bobcat successfully hunting a small alligator. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has been using camera traps to track feline leukomyelopathy (FLM), a disorder affecting panthers and bobcats, causing rear leg weakness and mobility issues. While the primary goal is to identify affected animals, the cameras also record other wildlife encounters. Although bobcats catching alligators isn’t unheard of, FWC researchers say this is the first time they’ve captured such a hunt on video. Meanwhile, efforts continue to monitor FLM’s impact on Florida’s wild feline population.
