This is the dramatic moment rescue teams saved a deer stranded on a frozen river in Washington, DC.

Locals spotted the hapless hoofed creature struggling to cross the icy Potomac River, prompting them to alert authorities.

The Brandywine Valley SPCA (BVSPCA), Metropolitan Police Harbor Patrol, and DC Fire's Fireboat crew immediately responded to retrieve the animal.

Footage shows the team aboard the airboat reaching the creature.

They then gently lifted it from the icy surface and boarded it on the watercraft.

The team reportedly released the deer on the riverbank, unscathed.

BVSPCA CEO Adam Lamb said: 'The swift teamwork of MPD and DC Fire saved a life today. We are grateful to the community and responders for their compassion and bravery.'
