Chinese tourists filled a Thai airport as they embarked on the Chinese New Year holiday.

Footage shows hundreds of visitors arriving at 3 am on January 25 at the bustling Suvarnabhumi International Airport serving Bangkok, Thailand.

A tourist who filmed the crowd said: 'I flew from Australia to Bangkok. It took around two hours to get through immigration because of how many people there were.'

Thailand has one of the largest overseas Chinese communities in the world as ethnic Chinese migrants fled to Southeast Asia to escape war and famine in southern China in the early to mid-20th century.

A chunk of the population in Thailand today is ethnically Chinese or has a Chinese ancestral heritage and the community has integrated Chinese culture into Thai society.
