STORYLINE:
Hungarian Minister of Regional Development Tibor Navracsics described the Holocaust as the "indefensible, inexplicable low point of European civilization" during a commemoration in Budapest on Monday.
The event at the Holocaust Memorial Center marked International Holocaust Remembrance Day and the 80th anniversary of Auschwitz's liberation on Jan. 27, 1945.
Navracsics reflected on Europe's descent into totalitarian ideologies in the 20th century, adding that Jan. 27, 1945, represents neither the beginning nor the end of the Holocaust's impact. The minister recalled that antisemitism had been festering for decades before erupting into genocide.
The aftermath of the Holocaust continues to resonate through broken lives and rebuilt families, said Navracsics.
