South Korean tourist hit by motorcycle rider who ignored red lights on a pedestrian crossing
This is the shocking moment a South Korean was struck by a motorcycle rider who ignored red lights on a pedestrian crossing.
The male tourist, 68, was walking over the white lines when he was hit by a speeding motorcycle who was trying to dodge the red light along Phaya Thai Road in Bangkok, Thailand, on January 23.
Footage shows the man stepping onto the road only to be struck by the two-wheeler. He cartwheeled and rolled across the pavement as passing drivers rushed over to help.
The Korean was rushed to Phyathai 1 Hospital with head injuries. The motorcycle driver, identified only as Kwanchai, was also taken to the hospital for minor wounds.
Police Colonel Watcharawee Thammasaema, superintendent of Phaya Thai Police Station, said: ‘The interrogation was delayed because the driver suffered minor injuries in the accident.
'His blood alcohol test returned negative. We will be meeting with the relatives of the Korean man later this week to discuss compensation.'
The driver Kwanchai was charged with reckless driving causing injury to others, and negligence causing bodily and mental harm.
The reckless driving charge carries a penalty of up to three years in jail, a fine of up to 60,000 baht, or both. While the negligence charge incurs a maximum fine of 10,000 baht, up to a month in prison, or both.
The zebra crossing is the same site where opthalmologist Dr. Waraluck Supawatjariyakul from Chulalongkorn University was run over and killed by Police Lance Corporal Norawit Buadok in January 2022.
The police officer was off-duty and was reportedly speeding on a Ducati super bike. The fatal accident sparked national outrage.
Norawit was initially sentenced to just one year and 15 days in prison. The Appeals Court later imposed a heavier sentence of 10 years and two months, in response to an appeal filed by Dr. Waraluck's family.
Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.
However, a lack of road safety education in schools along with notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws, and chronic under-investment in infrastructure, all appear to hamper the efforts.
