Granada, Spain - January 25, 2025 In a significant breakthrough, the Guardia Civil has recovered over 100 mammoth remains stolen from a paleontological site near Laguna de Padul in Granada. The operation, named "Probos," led to the judicial detention of three individuals accused of damaging the site, illegally appropriating scientifically valuable material, and covering up their actions. The stolen mammoth remains, some over 12,000 years old, were discovered in August when authorities were alerted to the illegal extraction of peat in the protected area of Sierra Nevada Natural Park. The suspects, aware of the paleontological significance, had hidden the fossils to avoid detection and continued their illicit activity. Through social media evidence, investigators tracked down the perpetrators. Expert paleontologists confirmed the fossils' connection to ancient proboscideans, highlighting their scientific and cultural value. The stolen fossils have been safely handed over to the Archaeological and Ethnological Museum of Granada, pending further legal proceedings. Authorities have imposed restrictions on the extraction of materials from the area to protect any remaining valuable fossils.
